Local Lucrative Opportunities

The Opportunities

1.)

Title: "The Shape of Fitness; Survey says...These Will be the Most Popular Trends for 2018

Description:

With only a small introduction explaining that lots of "resolutioners" are currently in the gym, the rest of the article lists the top 10 trends in fitness for 2018. The trend that ranks at the top of the list is "HIIT" training, or High-Intensity Interval Training. Other trends listed in the article include wearable technology, group training, and body weight training.

The Problem:

The problem lies in the first two sentences of the article where it points out that people are only in the gym because its a new year and asks if 2018 will be big for fitness. I believe these are problems because fitness needs to be a lifestyle for people and not just a trend. Every year there is an issue with people setting fitness goals and not following through with them.

Who Faces the Problem:

The people that face this problem are often the ones that don't have motivation to get in shape. Most of the time people deal with the problem of only staying in the gym for a month because they don't realize that the short-term sacrifice has long-term benefits.

2.)

Title: "Keep Options Open on Transit"

Description:

This article is focused on improving Tampa Bay's old transportation systems. There is a big focus in the article on reallocating railway funds toward "alternative transportation systems". Currently there are issues with legislation about getting bills passed to help Tampa Bay achieve their goal of moving the greatest number of people in the least amount of time.

The Problem:

Tampa Bay's transportation system is outdated

Who Faces the Problem:

Those affected by the problem are people that frequently use public transportation or are looking for an inexpensive alternative to traveling.

3.)

Title: "Hurricane Focus: Harden Buildings"

Description:

The article discusses the costs associated with Hurricane Irma and insurance claims stemming from it. The article continues to discuss solutions for people when hurricanes are nearing and emphasizes the importance of building hurricane-safe buildings.

The Problem:

Hurricanes come through cities and leave them with massive financial problems and citizens with destroyed homes

Who Faces the Problem:

People directly hit by hurricanes in Tampa Bay and also those who have to worry about evacuating to stay safe during storms.

4.)

Title: "School Survey Angers Parents; The Mitchell High Fundraiser was Killed and Results Destroyed by the end of the Day"

Description:

The article outlines a fundraiser started by a student at Mitchell High School that prompted students to fill out a survey that asks several questions about preferences in other people to attempt to match you with someone in the school. Some parents were rather upset with this survey and the school eventually had to kill the fundraiser.

The Problem:

A student-run fundraiser that has occurred for several years is now being shut-down because technically under law personal surveys like the one in the article must receive parental permission to be filled out.

Who Faces the Problem:

The students hoping to benefit from the fundraiser and the parents offended by the survey.

5.)

Title: "Survivor Speaks out Against Trafficking; A number of sexually-oriented businesses have closed"

Description:

Due to a survivor of human trafficking speaking out there was a mandate in Pasco county that required all sexually-oriented shops to have signs warning of the risks of human trafficking. Since then six of the seventeen shops in the county have closed.

The Problem:

Because of issues with human trafficking legislature has deemed it necessary to promote awareness of this at sexually-oriented shops but it has caused several to close

Who Faces the Problem:

The main people that face the problem are those that run sexually-oriented businesses

  1. Ben,

I thought you did a really good job on this assignment and thought all of your articles very interesting. The one that I found the most interesting and thought brought up a very good point was your first one on biggest fitness trends for 2018. The point that I found very interesting was how it seems like more people are going to the gym right after New Years because it was their resolution. Gym owners know this so they also make prices fairly cheaper so that they can get the money from more people joining their gyms and are trapped into a plan. I feel as if this New Years fitness trend lasts about two weeks to a month until people stop going which in a sense is sad to see.

  2. I find it interesting that the final two articles you chose showed the negative outcome of government or authoritative bodies interfering with business or citizen activities. It makes you wonder if it hinders Entrepreneurship in some ways. Of course the human trafficking story is worse than the fundraising one.

  3. Dear Ben,
I feel as though you hit the nail on the head of this assignment. I particularly enjoyed reading the second point. When we look at the transportation issue, there is a huge possibility to expand the market and really become successful in it. Actually, we have the same issue in my home city of Miami. We have a transportation system that is completely outdated. Also, I believe your 5th point has a very good opportunity as well. There is definitely an opportunity in setting up help for trafficking victims.
